If you live in New York State, as I do, you must be prepared to accept its culture of deference to bureaucracy. This is a place in which freedom and dignity have been ceded to regulators at all levels. Occasionally, though, there is resistance. It registers mostly as plaintive reflection, not useful action; still, it is comforting to see one’s fellow citizens questioning the premises of what we erroneously call “the nanny state”.
